Trek summarizes everything it does to further its commitment to sustainability

Trek Bicycle today releases its 2023 Sustainability Report, detailing the company’s learnings and progress on key sustainability initiatives, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The new report uses benchmark measurements from the 2021 Trek Sustainability Report, the first and only report of its kind to be released by a manufacturer within the cycling industry, to track its progress.

In its second collaboration with WAP Sustainability Consulting, Trek has examined a broader range of emissions categories, conducted life cycle assessments, and analyzed the impact at the end of product life, and during the phase of use, to have a more precise idea of the total emissions and to establish a clear starting point to undertake the reduction objectives.

The new report details ambitious near-term reduction targets that are in line with the Science Based Targets Initiatives (SBTi): first, reduce indirect emissions that occur in the Trek production chain (Scope 3 ) by 30% by 2032; second, reduce direct emissions from own or controlled sources (Scope 1) and indirect emissions from purchased power generation (Scope 2) by 68%; and finally, get all electricity from renewable sources before 2030.

To reduce emissions, Trek will not purchase carbon offsets, as this can interfere with the important work of understanding and improving business practices, and also does not allow companies to control how that investment is used and whether it has or not a tangible benefit.

“Since our first report in 2021, we have made considerable progress in becoming a more sustainable company, but we have also discovered areas where we still have a long way to go. This analysis and self-reflection has only further cemented our commitment to sustainability,” says Eric Bjorling, Trek Bicycle Director of Brand Marketing. “This second report transparently shows our emissions findings and the action steps we are willing to take to reduce our carbon footprint.”

As a manufacturer, the majority of Trek’s environmental impact comes from the raw materials used to create products, classified as Scope 3 emissions, which account for more than 95% of Trek’s total emissions. Emissions audits and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) helped the Trek team understand current carbon emissions costs, and determine how to reduce emissions cumulatively across products, their material composition, and their manufacturing process. manufacturing.

To address Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Trek is focusing on running a sustainable retail business and investing in areas such as green building construction and infrastructure improvements, as well as the adoption of electric transportation methods. The use of renewable energy is a key element of the sustainability commitment, and Trek is already working on this with the US headquarters and manufacturing facility already running on renewable energy. To meet the 2030 goal, Trek will validate that the power it purchases is from renewable sources through the use of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for each Trek-owned facility, and will explore ways to do the same for facilities not owned by Trek.

The report also details the progress made against the targets set out in the 2021 Sustainability Report.

Here are some of them:

Reduce Packaging Waste: By eliminating single-use plastic and foam material from packaging, Trek has been able to eliminate more than 240,000 kg of plastic packaging waste since 2020.

E-Bike Battery Recycling: Trek partnered with Call2Recycle in 2022 to ensure e-bike users have an easy and responsible solution when their battery reaches the end of its useful life. To date, Trek dealers have helped ensure the proper recycling of more than 3,000kg of e-bike batteries.

Products made with recycled material: Trek has replaced the use of textile materials to create garments made from recycled material, such as plastic water bottles. This effort has managed to prevent 24,923 kg of material from ending up in landfills, putting millions of discarded water bottles to better use.

Trek’s in-depth analysis to better understand its environmental impact highlights Trek’s strong commitment to the planet and the efforts it is making to make this world a better place for everyone, now and in the future.
