PSG is progressing in the ranking of the most expensive sports franchises in 2023.
The combined value of the 50 most expensive sports teams in the world in 2023 according to Forbes amounted to $256 billion (an average of $5.12 billion), an increase of 15% from the previous year. This year’s threshold is also higher than ever, at $3.7 billion, an increase of 19% from 2022.
The growing interest of investors in major sports franchises partly justifies this progression. The NFL’s Washington Commanders, ranked 12th on this year’s list of top 50 teams, were sold for a record $6.05 billion in July. This is 11 times the revenue produced by the club. That’s a sizable increase from the 21st-ranked Denver Broncos, whose 2022 asking price of $4.65 billion was nine times revenue. In February, the NBA’s Phoenix Suns were purchased for $4 billion (13 times revenue), compared to $1.66 billion (six times revenue) for the Utah Jazz in 2020.

Among this year’s top 50 teams, the seven football clubs have the highest five-year average growth (114%), led by Paris Saint-Germain. The French club has grown 334% since 2018 and is now valued at $4.2 billion, ranking 36th this year. Two English Premier League teams, Liverpool (up 173%) and Manchester City (up 102%), also contribute to the rise in value. Over the past five years, all three teams have consistently finished in the top three of their respective domestic leagues, and they usually compete in the lucrative Champions League.
Paris Saint-Germain valued at $4.2 billion
Paris Saint-Germain’s value has exploded in recent years, thanks to a number of factors. The club has performed well on the pitch, winning the Ligue 1 title seven times in the last eight years. It has also attracted some of the biggest names in football, like Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. Additionally, PSG has benefited from the growing popularity of football around the world.
The continued growth in the valuation of sports franchises is likely to be fueled by a number of factors, including the growing popularity of sports around the world, the increasing value of broadcast rights and the growing wealth of the world’s population. As a result, we can expect to see the value of the world’s most valuable sports teams continue to rise in the years to come.
