It’s a day of celebration and finals at Roland-Garros, where more than 8,000 spectators are expected to experience a grand finale to the Greenweez Paris Major 2023. A second edition that has already been successful both in terms of the attendance of the public than by the matches themselves and the flawless organization.
Yesterday, the semi-finals delivered their verdicts, cruel in particular for Alejandra Salazar and Sofia Araujo, who upset the world No. 1, or for the male No. 1 Juan Lebron and Ale Galan, who were the title holders in Paris.
Rome’s revenge
But the four qualified pairs – two for the ladies and as many for the men – have everything to make the public dream of high-flying finals, which will crown the best teams of this 2023 edition of the Major Premier Padel.
On the women’s side, the queens of the circuit, Ariana Sanchez and Paula Josemaria, are there. They will find Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega on their way, with the aim of taking revenge for the final of the Rome Major in July. Sanchez and Josemaria then lost with a score of 6/3 6/3, leaving Triay / Ortega the first female pair to win on the Premier Padel circuit.
In Paris, this match which smells of powder will be played from 2 p.m., on a center whose roof could be closed again, like yesterday and Friday, to provide shade for the players and spectators.
Grains of sand in the machine
In the wake of this women’s final, the poster for the men’s final has everything to please fans of padel, with an opposition between two Spanish-Argentinian pairs. On the one hand, Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello, even if they were only seeded 3 here, are the undisputed No. 1 this season, during which they won everything. As some of their opponents say, there’s not much you can do against them (other than cheer) when they’re at 100%.
But their opponents of the day are not the type to applaud without fighting or trying to slip grains of sand into the machine. Seeded No. 4 in Paris, Paquito Navarro and Federico Chingotto have flown through the competition so far, defeating Lebron and Galan yesterday with a clear score of 6/2 6/3. It’s a great Paquito that we’re waiting for today: the public’s favorite is never better than when he puts on a show and ignites the stadiums, especially as packed as the Philippe-Chatrier court will be.
Time for the show, therefore, in this arena which was already a temple of tennis and which now puts padel and its stars in the spotlight.
