Habib Sissoko: A Merited Sportsman and Legendary Leader in African Judo

Merited sportsman, conscientious, sociable leader and legendary courtesy, the president of the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Mali (Cnosm), Habib Sissoko, continues to reap the fruits of the good seeds that he has planted throughout his exemplary career as a sportsman and Olympic leader.

The celebration of the 60th anniversary of the African Judo Union (AUJ), on September 5 and 6, 2023 in Casablanca (Morocco), was an opportunity for his peers to lay new laurels for his services to sports, particularly judo.

To the titles, trophies and medals he has won, is now added the status of honorary president of the African Judo Union (UAJ), conferred on our compatriot, who remains one of the most emblematic figures of this martial art in Mali.

The other good news, which also came to us from Morocco, is the rise in the ranks of man. A black belt in judo for ages, he will now have a 7th in his line. To date, our humble knowledge, he is the only Malian to achieve this dignity in judo. In the sub-region, only one Senegalese, who recently died, reached the 8th dan in judo.

Trained at the Ren Canvel Hall, with Abdoulaye Aziz Thra, Abdoulaye Diop, Paul Diop and others, in the mid-1970s, Habib Sissoko remains an icon of several generations of Malian judokas whom he pushed the wheel.

Holder of several trophies, notably the Ambassadors Cups of Senegal and the Federal Republic of Germany at the end of the 1970s, Habib Sissoko represented Mali at the Moscow-80 Olympic Games where he did honor to his country by winning fights.

President of the Club des amis du judo, he boosted the practice of this martial art in Mali thanks to the organization of tournaments which attracted crowds of judokas and sympathizers in the early 2000s.

A member of the Cnosm for several years in the capacity of general treasurer, he was dubbed by his peers and inducted as president, a position he has held for more than a decade to the great joy of Malian athletes, all categories combined.

Habib Sissoko chaired the AUJ from 2016 to 2021. The African Judo Union was founded in December 1961 in Dakar (Sengal) under the name Afro-Malagasy Judo Union.

Among other benefits, judo strengthens the mind and body. Its practice is a stress reliever that helps manage your emotions.

Come on, Matre!
