NFL Star Nick Chubb Suffers Season-Ending Knee Injury, Uncertain Future with Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns not only lost the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers 22:26 in Week 2 of the NFL, but also lost star running back Nick Chubb, who suffered a serious knee injury.

Immediately after the game, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced a “very serious knee injury” from which Chubb will not return this season. Stefanski did not go into details and referred to further investigation.

The injury happened at the beginning of the second quarter when Chubb ran into a crowd of players on the way to the Steelers end zone and was stopped.

Chubb’s opponent, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was also involved in the tackle, fared better. He also had to be treated, but initially returned to the game. However, he later had to miss the game early with a chest injury.

Particularly bitter for Chubb: He had already injured his left knee in college while serving at Georgia in the 2015 season. At that time he tore his medial ligament, lateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament, which led to a knee reconstruction.

NFL: Will Nick Chubb never play for the Cleveland Browns again?

Chubb was a second-round pick by the Browns in the 2016 draft. Since then, he has been selected to the Pro Bowl four times. In 2022, he had his best season to date, rushing for 1,525 yards and twelve touchdowns.

In 2021, he had his rookie contract extended for three more years for $36.6 million. The contract runs until the end of the 2024 season, but it is unclear whether the Browns will keep him for that long.

There had already been speculation before the current season that Chubbs could be in Cleveland for the last season. If he were to be released next offseason, the Browns would save more than $12 million in cap space. The serious injury now makes further employment even more questionable.
