The scaffolding at the former municipal headquarters has been standing still for the months immediately following the safety measures carried out after the tragic explosion of 10 June 2019. Nothing has moved since then. Some homes, the municipal headquarters, a shop, a school gym, a pedestrian crossing and the council chamber are unusable. So much so that for years the city council has been held in ‘makeshift’ places such as the senior center.
In the meantime, some shops in the area have closed permanently and an entire area has suffered more than before, when the situation was not rosy in itself with the ongoing crisis in the historic center.
Yet at the time the Region, chaired by President Zingaretti, expressed great closeness and all possible help to restore the state of things. The first intervention approved by the Region is dated 25 June for 300 thousand euros, of which 250 thousand are intended for the restoration of the headquarters of the Municipality of Rocca di Papa and 50 thousand for the economic and commercial activities of the affected area. On 23 July another loan of 350 thousand euros will be allocated to the “Centro Urbano” school and adjacent areas so as to be able to ensure that students have the regular opening of the school year in the city institute. On August 2, another 100 thousand euros were approved, of which 80 thousand for the damage suffered by the homes damaged by the explosion and 20 thousand for housing assistance for displaced citizens. Finally, Astral (Azienda Strade Lazio Spa) had planned interventions of around 60 thousand euros for a city car park (Piazza Claudio Villa) and for the restoration of Corso Constituente, damaged by the explosion.
Some of these works were actually paid and spent and served to restart the school year, free up and redevelop the Course. As regards the former municipal headquarters, the situation has been identical for 4 years to the days following the explosion. Safety work has been carried out and scaffolding has been erected. Then nothing more. No one saw a worker working again. The waste and objects inside the courtyard remained there for 4 years and were released by the current administration, which promised to address the problem.
“Yet – says a resident – it should have been the first of the interventions to be carried out in order to relaunch the commercial activities which in the meantime have closed around there, to re-establish the council chamber and the gymnasium of the school in the urban centre. Not a small thing, for an area already suffering. I would also like to underline in terms of safety and hygiene that mice are circulating in there and that the scaffolding, for example when there is a lot of wind and heavy rain, makes sinister noises. The scaffolding has been there for four years, that’s too many years and I don’t think a temporary work can be safe in the long run.”
