SC Heerenveen suffered a fourth consecutive defeat in the Eredivisie on Saturday. The team of coach Kees van Wonderen lost 0-3 at home to Excelsior. Earlier in the day, FC Volendam fought to the first point against Heracles Almelo (2-2).
During the match, Van Wonderen saw white handkerchiefs fluttering from dissatisfied fans in the stands at the Abe Lenstra Stadium. Heerenveen is now twelfth, but it must fear that it will drop in the rankings on Sunday. Excelsior recorded its second win of this season and climbed to sixth place in the standings.
Heerenveen had a reasonable start to what should have been a festive evening, as the club celebrated the fact that it has been playing in the Eredivisie continuously for thirty years. Heerenveen striker Simon Olsson hit the target, but the goal was disallowed because reporter Thom Haye had made hands.
Excelsior took over the initiative and Couhaib Driouech gave the visitors a 0-1 lead after twenty minutes with a hard shot into the far corner. He scored his second two minutes later behind the Frisian goalkeeper Andries Noppert, but the VAR intervened and disallowed the goal for offside.
Just before half time, star Driouech prepared the 0-2. He advanced forward and passed the ball to Nikolas Agrafiotis, who finished it.
Heerenveen tried to reduce the deficit in the second half, but the team chased a goal in vain. Substitute Pelle van Amersfoort was close, but he tapped the ball just wide. Another substitute, Troy Parrott, made it 0-3 for Excelsior from a late counter-attack.

Volendam comes back from a 0-2 deficit
Earlier in the day, FC Volendam fought back from a 0-2 deficit at home against Heracles Almelo and drew 2-2. Because of this point, Volendam is no longer at the bottom. Almere City is now eighteenth, based on a better goal difference. Heracles is in the middle of the table with seven points.
Halfway through the score was still 0-0 in Volendam. Heracles could have taken the lead before halftime, but Mohamed Sankoh missed a big chance in the opening phase after poor defending from the home team.
Moments later, Bryan Limbombe was close to scoring. The Heracles attacker came across goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. Sankoh seemed to give Heracles the lead, but the striker was offside when he scored.
Brian De Keersmaecker opened the score for Heracles in the 51st minute, after Justin Hoogma had won a headed duel. Emil Hansson beautifully scored the 0-2 in the 57th minute. In the 71st minute, Benaissa Benamar made the game exciting again. Robert Mühren caused great joy among the home team’s supporters in the 87th minute.
Volendam fans threw many drinking cups onto the field after the late equalizer. Referee Ingmar Oostrom decided to stop the match entirely in accordance with the rules of the KNVB. After a short break, Navajo Bakdraad shot the crossbar on behalf of the visitors. Mühren missed a great chance to make it 3-2 deep in injury time.
