From Jackpot to Reality: An Interview with the German Lottery King, Chico, One Year Later

Exactly a year ago, Chico hit the jackpot of around ten million euros. Where is the money, does he regret his spending and why does the 42-year-old still live with his parents? An interview.

It’s been exactly a year since six correct numbers on a lottery ticket made Kürsat Yildirim, alias Chico, a 42-year-old from Dortmund, a multimillionaire. He won a total of 9.8 million euros in the lottery.

Since then, the most famous lottery king from Germany has experienced a lot and spent large amounts of money, but also put a lot of money away, as Kürsat Yildirim explains in the t-online interview. A year, a Porsche, a Ferrari, a new girlfriend, lots of envy and an Instagram channel whose news he can hardly keep track of.

t-online: Chico, it’s been a year since you hit the jackpot. The question on my mind: What did you do with all that money?

Chico: I invested more than half of my winnings in real estate. By the way, all of them in Dortmund except one. Everything paid in cash. From this I earn good income through rents. However, I won’t say how much I put in and what I earn each month.

I have now also become an entrepreneur. Among other things, I now have a social media GmbH, which also brings in money. I also have small contracts as an advertising face – I will continue to expand this field. Everything is going the way I want it to.

How did your first year as a multimillionaire go for you?

People always say: “Making your first million is hard, the rest comes automatically.” For me it was suddenly ten million – deal with it. This is really, really difficult.

Now I see how people are changing, and sometimes even becoming disgusting. That makes you paranoid. You don’t know who to trust in the end. But thank God I have stable people.

I won’t let anyone touch me anymore. I have my best friend, I have found my love, my brother is here, my parents are healthy, I have secured myself and no longer need to work in my life.

Does that mean there are also a lot of envious people?

Sure, I’ve been very disappointed by old friends: “Yes, we were often out together, this and this.” I also helped several people and I regret that. Some people think that because I have ten million now, they can come. Those who beg, who cry – some come together with their families, with their wives, with their mothers: “Chico, we’ve known each other for so long, Chico, please help. At the end of the month or in three months we’ll give you your money again or in installments.”

When the date comes, they drag it out or don’t get in touch at all. Instead of saying they can’t do it, they walk away. They used to hide and cross the street when they saw me. Now they want to hug and kiss me. To some people I want to say, “Keep hiding.”

Now that you’ve hit the jackpot, you’ve gone public straight away. Do you regret that?

No, I would do it the same way again. I have no regrets since I won. Sure, I bought a few things wrong. Clothes and stuff – but no other bad investments, my karma is clean. Everywhere I have had debts, I have paid back more than twice as much. I am very happy. I’m just fine.

I’m also happy that I can give a little back to my best friend, my brother – they went through a lot with me, so did my entire family. They always stood behind me like a wall. It should stay as it is. I would like to continue to be in public, maybe even in a movie.
