Mirra Andreeva set a mark with her first round success in Beijing.
When Coco Gauff beat Paula Badosa in last year’s 1,000 event, Gauff gave the Spaniard five games. To date, no player under the age of 18 had achieved such a clear victory against a player in the top 20 at such a highly ranked tournament. Andreeva has now topped this mark.
The 16-year-old gave her opponent just four games in the first round game in Beijing. In terms of clarity, the 6:2, 6:2 was definitely an improvement. It should also be mentioned that Kreijcikova is a former Grand Slam winner, although she may not currently be playing in the form of her French Open title from 2021.
Andreeva can rise in the ranking
Andreeva can now take the next step against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Tuesday and collect valuable points so that in the future she will no longer have to play qualifying at the tournaments in the highest tour category after the Grand Slams. Maybe soon again against a player who is among the best 20 in the world.
