General Chairman of the Indonesian National Olympic Committee (NOC) Raja Sapta Oktohari hopes badminton can rise and reap success in 2024 Olympics.
Okto expressed his hopes for the sport of badminton in line with the results achieved by the Indonesian contingent at the 2022 Asian Games (2023) and towards the Olympics which will take place next year.
“We are also encouraging badminton to come back again. After this we will sit down again with the stakeholders to find a solution,” said Okto at a dinner with NOC, the Asian Games Chef de Mission team and the media at the Dahua Hotel Restaurang, Saturday ( 7/10) p.m.
At the 2022 Asian Games, the Indonesian badminton team failed to achieve the target of three golds set by PBSI. Not only did they fail to win gold, Jonathan Christie and his friends were unable to win a medal.
The negative result in Hangzhou was the worst during the Asian Games for PBSI. In the previous Asian Games, during badminton competitions since 1962, this was the first time a medal had failed to be won.
In connection with the 2024 Olympics, Okto hopes that the achievements of the entire Indonesian contingent in various sports can improve compared to the previous edition.
“Next year is the year of the Olympics. We will encourage our athletes to achieve even better results. Hopefully at the Paris Olympics we can make history again. Because in the history of the Olympics we have only ever won two gold medals.”
“We see some of Indonesia’s sporting potential, from weightlifting, archery, surfing, which is what allows Indonesia to get more medals than before,” explained Okto.
With a row of branches that have the potential to produce gold for Indonesia, Okto is optimistic that the revival of badminton can add to the Red and White’s record of achievements at the Olympics.
“We hope that if badminton can recover, maybe we can get more than two gold medals [di Olimpiade],” he explained, referring to the best gold medal that Indonesia ever achieved at the 1992 Olympics.
