Baseball Legend Steve Garvey Announces Bid for California Senate Seat as Republican

[The Epoch Times, October 11, 2023](Reported by Epoch Times reporter Wen Hui) Baseball legend Steve Garvey will run for the U.S. Senate representing California. After months of speculation, the Republican confirmed the news in an exclusive interview with Fox 11.

“If you think back to the 1970s and 1980s, California was the heart of America and now it’s just a murmur,” Garvey said in his first television interview of the campaign. “California has the potential to be the greatest state in America, but we the people need to Stand up again.”

The former Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres first baseman has considered a career in politics for decades. Throughout his playing career, teammates called him “Senator.”

He spent months this year traveling around the Golden State to determine whether to run for the Senate. He said almost everyone wanted to talk to him about quality of life issues.

He added: “People know me through observation over the years. They know that I act based on common sense, they know that I am compassionate, and they know that I am a consensus-builder.”

No Republican has represented California in the Senate since 1992. Garvey is running as a Republican in a state where Republican Trump lost by nearly 30 percentage points.

“I’ve always said, I’ve never run for Democrats, Republicans or independents, but for all the fans,” he said. “Now, I’m running for everyone.”

Garvey voted for Trump in both 2016 and 2020. “When I get the vote, I’m going to vote for the best person for the job,” he said.

On the issue of abortion, when asked whether he supported abortion or the right to life, he said: “The people of California have spoken out, and the most important thing for the senator to do is to listen to the people’s voice.”

Garvey said the biggest international issue is national security, and he is particularly concerned about border issues.

When asked which Senate committee he would most like to serve on, Garvey responded that he would like to work on environmental issues.

The 74-year-old has pledged to run for just one term of six years. ◇
