Marco Verratti Opens Up About His Nightlife and Performance on and off the Field in Paris

In an interview with l’Equipe, Marco Verratti admits to having had fun off the field, in restaurants or in nightclubs during his long stay in Paris. The Italian assures that this did not weigh on his performances.

Marco Verratti (30 years old), his delicious technique, his regular yellow cards… and his taste for nightlife. The Italian midfielder left a bit of this image in Paris when leaving the club this summer for Al-Arabi (Qatar) after eleven spent at PSG. In an interview with L’Equipe, the Italian international (55 caps, 3 titles) admits his taste for restaurants or nightclub trips and recalls that he did not hide it.

“There are players who hide, I have always assumed responsibility”

“It’s my way of being,” he confides. “For me, football has always been a game. Afterwards, I have a life. The pleasures I had were going to a restaurant, having a glass of wine when there was no training.”

“There are players who hide, I have always assumed responsibility, in life as well as on the pitch. I think that people also love me a little for that: they see that I am normal. I knew the moments where I could eat with my friends, go clubbing when I was younger. I spent eleven years here, it’s normal that people came across me more than others. I’m not going to stay all days at home.”

The most successful player in the history of PSG (30) assures, however, that his gaps have never impacted his performance. “I have always been very professional,” he says, recalling having had the trust of all the coaches who have succeeded one another on the Parisian bench, despite the strong competition for his position. “I have never been a minute late for training in eleven years,” he adds.

He also justifies his more recurring injuries by the length of his professional career, which began almost fifteen years ago. Last January, Verratti admitted to having been “embarrassed” by the echoes about his lifestyle.

“This reputation embarrassed me because, most of the time, it was not true,” he declared in France Football. “When you are a journalist, you have to do things with honesty. If it’s true, I take my responsibilities, as has been the case many times. But I was made to appear as someone who went out all in the evenings. In the end, it didn’t work out.”
