Julian Nagelsmann celebrated his debut as national coach at the international match in Hartford against the USA. In defense, the coach relied on experience, while on offense the youth were given their chance. In the end there was a victory. That’s how the game went.
Before the German national soccer team’s international match against the USA, there was a minute’s silence for the “people who died during and after the devastating terrorist attack on Israel,” as the DFB announced shortly before kick-off of the game at Pratt & Whitney Stadium in Hartford had. “The German Football Association (DFB) and the American association US Soccer have agreed on this common sign of peace,” the DFB said in a statement. President Bernd Neuendorf had previously expressed the solidarity of German football in talks with the Israeli ambassador in Berlin, Ron Prosor, and the president of the Israeli Football Association, Moshe Zuares. “The terrorist attack by Hamas on the State of Israel and its citizens fills the DFB with horror and sadness. Hamas’ cruel actions have cost numerous innocent victims. In this difficult situation, football in Germany stands firmly on the side of our friends and partners in Israel,” said Neuendorf.

The German association boss emphasized that the DFB has had a decades-long, close friendship with the Israeli Football Association. After the Hamas attacks, the German U-21 national team’s planned game in the European Championship qualifiers in Israel was canceled. In the youth sector, selection teams from Germany and Israel regularly compete against each other in friendly games. The senior national team last won a test game against Israel 2-0 in Sinsheim in March 2022.
In terms of sport, national coach Julian Nagelsmann made some changes on his debut. As expected, defender Mats Hummels celebrated his comeback to the German national football team after more than two years. The 34-year-old from Dortmund played alongside Antonio Rüdiger in the center of defense. Pascal Groß replaced Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, who was suffering from a flu-like infection, in defensive midfield. The England professional played in the center alongside captain Ilkay Gündogan.
