BROOK PARK, Ohio (WOIO) – The Brook Park city council passed legislation to protect city sports referees from physical altercations.
The ordinance protects sports officials from physical harm and confrontations by charging violators with disorderly conduct.
The ordinance was proposed after a peewee football game between Berea Midpark and Strongsville ended early due to unruly behavior between parents and coaches.
While expressing his opposition to the ordinance, Councilman Poindexter said, “That’s already assault. Do you think a person who is willing to commit assault is worried about an extra misdemeanor thrown on top?”
During the proposal, Councilman Scott says 80% of new officials quit within the first three years because of abuse.
The city council passed the ordinance with a vote of 5-2.
