Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, celebrated this Monday the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include the Flag Football (tochito flag) as one of the new sports that will be part of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“The NFL is committed to working together to strengthen Flag Football’s place in the Olympic movement for the long term; we will continue this exciting journey with the International American Football Federation, the Organizing Committee Los Angeles 2028the International Olympic Committee and USA Football”.
The commissioner’s reaction came after the IOC announced earlier that Flag Football will be part of the 2028 Olympic program along with baseball-softball, cricket (in ‘Twenty20’ version), lacrosse (in ‘Sixes’ mode) and squash.
“It is a tremendous honor for any athlete to represent their country at the Olympic Games. We have no doubt that this decision will inspire millions of young people around the world to play Flag football for years to come.”
Since July 2022, the vice president of the NFLTroy Vincent, and the president of the IFAF, Pierre Trochet, announced the creation of the Vision28 group, an alliance that was created with the aim of this sport reaching the Olympic Games.
“We congratulate the International American Football Federation for this historic achievement for Flag Football and the global community that loves and plays our game,” the commissioner said.
Pierre Trochet also applauded the IOC’s decision.
“This is a great historic moment for our sport and our global American football community. We are convinced that Flag Football will offer an exciting new dimension to the Olympic Games, uniting them for the first time in history with the number one sport in the United States. United in its youngest format,” explained the IFAF president.
Flag Football is a reduced format of American football with five members per team in which to stop the opponent, one of the flags or ribbons they carry on both sides of the hip must be removed without using physical contact.
