Inclusion in Judo: Celebrating Success and Community

Inclusion: a win for everyone

Speyer. “When are we going to a competition again?” Sascha and his judo friends don’t let up. They love to go away together, show off their skills and then celebrate, regardless of whether they won or lost. What is a given for many athletes and takes place almost every weekend is something very special for the “ID-Judoka”. ID stands for “intellectual disability”. For years they have had the opportunity to train regularly and also take belt tests at the Speyer Judo Sports Club. Jürgen Teutsch, who is also active as a judo trainer at Special Olympics Rhineland-Palatinate and has been leading the group for about a year, is always looking for suitable competitions that are suitable for his protégés. “It’s not just about the sporting aspect. The community, cheering each other on, supporting each other and experiencing something outside of the family and the residential group are much more important,” says the experienced trainer.

The open Baden-Württemberg state championships for judoka with physical and mental disabilities on October 14th in Bietigheim offered the opportunity. The almost 100 participants from Bavaria, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg showed the interest and need for corresponding tournaments. After a three-year Corona break, the Elchesheim-Illingen judo club invited people to the tournament. Depending on their physical ability, the judoka were divided into different performance groups (WK 2 or WK3).

1st places were won with fast techniques: Temir Labaznov and Niklas Zwally (Niedersimten) in competition class 2, and Katja Storzum in competition class 3

2nd places went to Sascha Hoffmann, Marvin Weber, Miriam Ritter, Mihailo Torlakovic

3rd place Jan de Kok

5th place David Schott.

Due to their good performances, Temir and Niklas were nominated for the German association team championships on November 18th in Munich to start in the Rhineland-Palatinate team.

The group began their journey home proud of their medals. But after the competition is before the competition, and so it didn’t take long until the question arose in the car: “When are we going to a competition again?”
