Arthur Fils Shines Amidst Gloomy Season for French Tennis, Defeats Stefanos Tsitsipas in Antwerp Semifinals

The 2023 season was, as a whole, very gloomy for French tennis. But it will at least have allowed Arthur Fils to burst onto the screen. Winner of his first tournament on the main circuit in Lyon last May, the native of Bondoufle will have the opportunity to win a second title this Sunday. He qualified for the final of the Antwerp tournament by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas this Saturday (7-6, 7-6). A nice coup, his second against a member of the Top 10, ratified at the end of a hell of a performance.

Having gone through his North American tour, hardly to his advantage in Asia in recent weeks, Stefanos Tsitsipas seemed to have found some color on the Antwerp side. Having managed to reach the last four without blinking, the Greek could legitimately hope to honor his status as number 1 seed until the end and lift the trophy. But he came across a bone, named Arthur Son. The two men initially went blow for blow throughout a very balanced first set, during which each played their service games solidly. A bit more efficient, the Frenchman was able to be opportunistic to pocket this round in the tie-break (7-5).
