The Sicilian Region has announced an important investment of 1.8 million euros to promote the experimentation of artificial intelligence in high schools. The initiative is promoted by the Department of Education and Vocational Training with the aim of supporting teachers in assisting and educating students.
The projects will be selected from the proposals presented by the schools and will be able to receive funding of up to a maximum of 80,000 euros each. These projects must be carried out during the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 school years and involve at least two first classes, covering at least three subjects of the course of study.
The regional councilor for education and professional training, Mimmo Turano, underlined the importance of artificial intelligence in the educational sector. He stated that AI does not aim to replace traditional teaching with new technologies, but rather to complement it. Turano underlined the importance of the human element and the central role of teachers in the education of students. Artificial intelligence can help combat school dropout in the first two years of high school, offering constant support in understanding topics and a virtual resource that is always available.
AI will be used to propose exercises, make corrections and generate examples. At the same time, it will provide teachers with information on student progress. This system will be based on educational materials such as lessons, exercises and books, ensuring reliable and personalized content for students’ needs.
A fundamental requirement for the projects will be collaboration with Italian universities or research bodies, which will also have the task of training the teachers involved. The institutes will also have the opportunity to choose international partners who are experts in the sector. If successful, the applications developed can be adopted by other schools, helping to spread good practices throughout the regional education system.
