This is an initiative which is part of the “5,000 sports fields” plan aimed at supporting the development of local sports facilities between now and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. From February, a dojo including a 35 m² tatami will be set up within the Libération nursery and elementary school. The 35,000 euros in costs will be covered 80% by the National Sports Agency, the 20% will be paid by the sports federation.

The City had been surveyed by a delegate from the judo authorities to participate in the plan 1,000 solidarity dojos, the number hoped for in France and overseas in 2026. For the moment, 200 have been announced.

For its part, the city has two dojos, one departmental at the Polygone and the second more modest at the end of rue Gambetta.

Reasons

If initially, vacant municipal halls had been targeted, this wish came up against the principle of reality: the non-existence of empty premises in a context of scarcity of buildings for associations and sports clubs. It was then that the deputy mayor in charge of sports Jean-Marie Le Bras learned that empty school rooms could be used. Deputy mayor in charge of school affairs, Sophie Cousty took over with the Children’s department.

Libération primary school was selected for several reasons. Firstly because initially one class was supposed to close, a loss which ultimately did not occur: the school kept its five classes where 80 students were educated. With already an inclination of the educational team around motor skills and sports such as triathlon. The small multipurpose room on the ground floor where the motor skills exercises take place was chosen.

“This is the first dojo project in Charente-Maritime,” enthuses Jean-Marie Le Bras. Registered schoolchildren will use the dojo during school hours while extracurricular time will be managed by the Judo Club.

A real plus for this neighborhood which suffers from its eccentricity, especially since the commitment covers five years.
