Indian badminton player Ayush Shettywho won the bronze medal at the junior world championships earlier this year, overcame two qualifying rounds to make the main draw of the Guwahati Masters 2023 men’s singles event on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old Shetty first saw the back of Kiran Kumar Mekala with a 21-12, 21-15 win before beating Siddharth Pratap Singh 21-14, 22-21. Ayush Shetty will face compatriot Arunesh Hari in the first round of the BWF Super 100 event.
Abhishek Saini, Pranay Katta, Saneeth Dayanand Shimoga, Bharat Raghav, Tarun Reddy Katam and Varun Kapur, Bhargav Somasundara also qualified as all eight men’s singles qualification slots went to the Indian badminton players.
B Sai Praneeth, Mithun Manjunath and Kiran George will be the top Indian badminton players in the main draw of the men’s singles event.
However, the women’s singles qualification round saw the 19-year-old Isharani Baruah qualify as the lone Indian shuttler.
Baruah, part of the Assam badminton women’s team that won the gold medal at the National Games in Goa, defeated compatriot Shriyanshi Valishetty 21-15, 21-12 in the first qualifying round. She later got the better of Indonesia’s Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-19, 21-16 to qualify for the main draw.
Isharani Baruah will join Unnati Hooda, Ashmita Chaliha, Tanya Hemanth, Malvika Bansod and Ira Sharma in the main draw. However, Baruah will have her task cut out against the third seed Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei in the opening round.
Results at Guwahati Masters 2023 will count towards players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
