November was the month of the great fighters. Three Bonn athletes were able to celebrate top international successes and win medals indoors on the mat in the autumnal weather outside. But the two other candidates for the GA Athlete of the Month for November also impressed with their exceptional performances. Four athletes from Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg district and von der Ahr have been nominated for the election for the first time.
Until next Tuesday, December 12th, at 12 p.m., readers of the General-Anzeiger can vote for their favorites online at www.ga.de/sportlerwahl. The candidates: the two judoka Jano Rübo and Marion Velten, grappling fighter Kristina Rau, roller skater Philipp Bodamer and young basketball player Janne Müller.
Twice this year had happened John Rübo already secured the silver medal at major events. In his first season with the adults, the Bonn judoka became German individual runner-up, then European runner-up with the team. In November he took the crown and won gold with the German team at the U23 European Championships. The 20-year-old defeated individual European champion Koen Heg in the final against the Netherlands. He also finished fifth in the individual.
Even returned as world champion Philipp Bodamer home from the World Figure Skating Championships in Freiburg. The 16-year-old young roller skater from Fortuna Bonn confidently won the compulsory race at the tournament, in which 190 athletes from 16 nations took part.
A novelty was achieved Kristina Rau. The 25-year-old from Bonn, who trains at TKSV Duisdorf, was the first German to win a medal at the World Combat Games in a wrestling discipline. Rau secured the bronze medal in grappling at the largest martial arts event in the world held in Riyadh.
Young basketball players showed what a great career he could have ahead of him Janne Müller. The youth national player helped out twice in November for the Telekom Baskets Bonn men’s second team in the regional league – and scored 33 points against Wulfen and even 38 points against Bayer Leverkusen. In the junior Bundesliga NBBL, the guard averages 24.5 points. He also plays regularly for the Baskets cooperation partner Rhöndorf Dragons – and, as a 17-year-old, scores an average of seven points for the leaders of the ProB, the third league in Germany.
Has been enormously successful internationally for years Marion Velten. The 42-year-old judoka became vice world champion in the over 40 age group in Abu Dhabi for the third time in her career. She had previously become German champion and European champion in the class up to 70 kilograms this year. She only had to admit defeat to a Frenchwoman in the final at the World Cup.
