Alejandra Valencia: A Year of Triumph in Archery

Mexico City. In 2023, Alejandra Valencia lived the best year of her sports career. The archery team managed to get on the podium in the Central American Games, Pan American Games, World Cups and World Championships. Her efforts earned her a coveted National Sports Award and a nomination for best goalkeeper of the year, which motivates her to begin the stretch to Paris 2024 in February.

I don’t want to skip steps, because I still don’t have my participation assured. In February the countdown begins with the filters where the names of those who will represent Mexico in the Olympics will be defined, so we are going slowly until we reach the main objective, commented the Sonoran.

Although the selected team has been producing consistent results on an international scale for several years, it is not overconfident.

I can stumble, so it’s best to follow the straight path. It’s true that I achieved a lot of medals this year, but I’m always trying to improve. The most important thing for me is that people feel happy with what I achieved and that more and more people come to my sport.

Of course, another Olympic medal is in the sights of the selected team, who achieved bronze in the mixed modality together with Luis Álvarez in Tokyo 2020.

Anything is possible, what I achieved in Japan whetted my appetite to get back on the podium and I have even thought that it is not unreasonable to think about winning as a team, individual and mixed. I have that dream pending, but I don’t want to put things forward, Valencia added.

He burst into archery with force. Having just turned 17, the athlete from Sonora won two gold medals (individual and team) at the 2011 Guadalajara Pan American Games and earned a ticket to her first Olympic Games in London 2012. Before, she had already achieved her first bronze in a World Cup.

It was just the beginning of a brilliant career in which he has stood on the podium in all the major international competitions.

Mental work is a fundamental part of the athlete’s preparation.

It’s not easy to believe that you are good, even if you are. In my case it is 10 years of mental work, which for me is what makes the difference between being first and last, because we all do the same thing, she shared.

As a team, Mexico also has the chance to shine at the summer event in Paris.

“I think we are ranked second after Korea, it is a work of many years and we still need to improve a lot. It is also important to have separate goals, because this way we will be in good shape to compete as a country.”

2023 was full of competitions, in which Valencia achieved great results. We are closing a season in which we had everything because the cycle was short. It has been one of the best of my career, because I won medals and the World Archery also nominated me for the best of the year. I am proud of my results and the best is yet to come.
