A Look Back at the Year in Brescia Sports: Triumphs, Failures, and New Beginnings

It’s been an intense year, even for Brescia sport. And although it isn’t finished yet and the last matches remain to be played (Brescia and FeralpiSalò will be in action on 26 December), it’s time to take stock. It’s difficult to summarize 12 months in a few lines, but we chose to do so focusing the spotlight on six individual days. A sort of summary of what was undoubtedly a year full of successes, but also of “bold descents and ascents”.

They were six significant days, each symbolic in its own way, in which a piece of the history of our home sport was written. So here they are, in chronological order.

Germani Pallacanestro Brescia beat Virtus Bologna 84-76 accomplishes the feat of 2023 by winning the Italian Cup. Historic trophy, the first in history, won by overcoming Milan first against all odds, then Pesaro and then the Emilians in the final, with an incredible Della Valle. And the city, which recently became Bergamo Italian Capital of Culture, pays homage to a fantastic team.

We are on the eve of Easter and this time it’s FeralpiSalò’s turn. But there is something historic here too, because promotion to Serie B arrives thanks to the 1-0 success over Triestina. A goal that President Pasini’s club has been chasing for some time and achieved thanks to the work of a coach like Stefano Vecchi and a group built to do well, but month after month capable of becoming even unbeatable. The start in the new world of Serie B was not the simplest, but the latest victories with Cremonese and Sampdoria have given new awareness.

7 May – Lumezzane returns to Serie C

Lumezzane celebrates promotion to Serie C

After six years Lumezzane go back to the professionals. He does so by dominating the Serie D championship and celebrating thanks to the victory on the Varese pitch. Andrea Caracciolo president, Lodovico Camozzi owner, Arnaldo Franzini coach: the trio creates a gift for the whole of Valgobbia, which has always been linked to the red and blue colours. And given the potential, the best is yet to come…

1 June – Shame on Brescia, on and off the pitch

However, there are also dark moments, defeats and the madness resulting from them. Brescia drew at home against Cosenza (1-1) in the second leg of the play outs and, after being defeated 1-0 in the first leg match, collapses on the field in Serie C. In reality the match ends 3-0 by default, because the invasion of the pitch by the hooligans even prevents the referee from closing the match. Guerrilla on the field, guerrilla on the streets of Mompiano. Shame becomes the most popular word. And while Brescia wonders why there is so much madness, the club begins a legal battle for readmission to Serie B, taking advantage of the fact that Reggina does not have the requirements to register. Battle that lasts all summer.

26 August – Silver relay for half of Brescia

The athletes of the Italian 4×100 relay with the silver medal around their necks – Francesca Grana

From Brescia we fly to Budapest and the Athletics World Championships. Italy is the protagonist in various specialties, but all eyes are on Marcell Jacobs called to have his say, as an Olympic champion, in the 100 meters. And things don’t go at all as hoped. However, there is the relay team, the 4x100m, which half speaks Brescia. Because next to Jacobs there is Camuno Roberto Rigali, lined up a bit surprisingly but undoubtedly in form. And Rigali is the first member of the group, with Jacobs second. The Azzurri fly and won a fantastic silver behind only the USA.

August 30 – The end of a nightmare

And we arrive at the end of the month, when Brescia closes the circuit of the sporting and civil courts. The Council of State in Rome officially readmits Massimo Cellino’s club to Serie B, effectively decreeing the bankruptcy of Reggina. And the swallow championship starts late, but takes on a new appearance only with thearrival of Maran on the bench.
