Struggles and Hopes: The Journey of Hervin Ongenda, Former PSG Player

Made in Paris. For Hervin Ongenda, the capital is more than special in his eyes. This is where he came into the world on June 24, 1995. It was also in Paris that he was born as a footballer. It all started for him at Paris FC, which he joined at the age of 8. After a stint with FC Les Lilas, the man who played for the French team between the U16s and the Espoirs was spotted by Paris Saint-Germain in 2006. There, the young man, from the same generation as ‘Adrien Rabiot and Presnel Kimpembe, climbed all the ranks to the professional team. He also made his debut on January 6, 2013 during a 1/32 final of the Coupe de France against Arras.

A great hope for PSG

Launched by a certain Carlo Ancelotti a little over ten years ago, he replaced Ezequiel Lavezzi. But the rest of the story did not live up to his expectations and those of Paris. Great hope of PSG, Titi, who had refused advances from both Manchester, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal to remain within his favorite club, had few opportunities to express himself when Laurent Blanc was arrived on the Parisian bench. Questioned by the BBC Sport A few years ago, the player, not really satisfied with his situation and his status as a substitute, had exchanged with the Cévenol.

“I thought I wasn’t playing enough at PSG. I went to see the coach and he told me I was going to play more. I asked him what more meant. He was honest and explained that he couldn’t tell me in advance. That’s why I went to Bastia. Unfortunately, Claude Makélélé was fired in November.” Indeed, during the 2014-15 financial year, he was sent on loan to Corsica in order to continue and have playing time. But the departure of Claude Makélélé, who had brought him in, and the arrival of Ghislain Printant has not helped his affairs.

The Titi has taken flight

The loan of the player, who appeared 19 times, was not really convincing. Back in Paris, he alternated between the first team and the reserve, which played in the CFA. Finally, he left Paris in the winter of 2017, after 16 matches in all competitions played in 4 years with the pros (2 goals). A record that does not match the talent of the young man, perhaps a little too impatient according to some media. But for Hervin Ongenda, other points must be taken into consideration. This is what he told us during an interview conducted a few years ago on our site.

“What was hard for me was how I left Paris. In total incomprehension. On the one hand, people at the club told me that I had to extend and then be loaned out. And then, on the other side, speaking with the sports director Olivier Létang, he told me that I had to leave. I found myself a little lost. Me, if I could have stayed all my life in Paris, I would have stayed all my life in Paris.” But he had to permanently cut the cord with PSG. After that he joined PEC Zwolle. But he failed to revive in the Netherlands, where he only played 3 matches.

He had a series of inconclusive experiments

The footballer, who had signed a 3 1/2 year contract, only stayed 6 months. Both parties decided to part ways amicably during the summer. “Partly due to adaptation problems such as the language barrier, Hervin Ongenda’s club career did not really see the light of day. He only made three appearances for the first team and didn’t score. Zwolle had also specified in a press release. After several failures, the player took time to find a new club. In the meantime, he worked with a physical trainer.

And in March 2018, he finally settled down at Murcia, a Segunda B club. Ongenda played two games before moving on for a change during the summer. Direction Romania. There, he wore the colors of the Botoșani club. And he was finally able to continue again, having played 37 matches (3 goals). The following season, he played 17 matches (3 goals) before signing for Chievo Verona during the winter transfer window. It was not the best choice since he only played 3 Serie B matches. Back in Botoșani, he resumed his good habits. But he left the club again a year and a half later, in the winter of 2022.

He has been without a club for six months

This time, he joined Cyprus and Apollon Limassol. A year later, the former PSG player took to the skies again after 21 appearances and 2 goals. He returned to Romania where he signed in the winter of 2023 for Rapid Bucharest. His adventure there ended after 6 months and 4 matches. Since then, Hervin Ongenda has not found a club, his last official meeting therefore dates back to May 22, 2023. That day, he played 17 minutes against Universitatea Craiova. For 7 months, he has been free and on the market. But there weren’t really any suitors during the summer.

This winter, the striker can try to relaunch himself in a club looking for reinforcement at a lower cost and motivated by the idea of taking on a new challenge. Hervin Ongenda waits for a hand to be extended or a door to open to do what he loves most in the world: playing football. But his lack of stability (7 clubs), his inconclusive experiences or his reputation which sticks to his jersey can slow down certain teams. The footballer and older man is still passionate about football. In 2019, he told us: “my goal is to return to the highest level. I want to break everything!” At 28, it’s not yet too late.
