Florian Mayer ended his career after the US Open 2018
Former German tennis professional Florian Mayer has once again spoken about psychological problems during his career. “Tennis is a damn brutal sport,” he was quoted as saying Southgerman newspaper at an event organized by the Bavarian Tennis Association.
After Mayer ended his active career after the US Open 2018, he suffered a breakdown. “I couldn’t get up anymore. It was really like a complete knockout,” said Mayer.
He first noticed problems before the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2004. “I was so nervous the two days before the match,” reported the now 40-year-old. His sleep in particular suffered. That’s why Mayer took a sleeping pill; he continued to use sleeping pills throughout the rest of his career. He “just wanted to leave at some point because everything was too much for me.”
Roller coaster ride
His career became a roller coaster ride. “Those were hard times and I couldn’t come close to confirming the success,” said Mayer. In 2007 he fell out of the top 100 and revealed “burnout”. Nevertheless, he continued to fight; 18th place in the world rankings in 2011 was the best result of his career.
He’s doing better now. Above all, his family is an important source of support. Nevertheless, he still seeks professional help, reported Mayer.
