Mike Candrea he is an absolute legend in the world of softball: after coaching for five years (1981-1985) at Central Arizona College, winning two NJCAA national titles, from 1986 to 2021 he was head coach at the University of Arizona, a powerhouse of collegiate softball that in the thirty-six years of Candrea’s management it has won eight NCAA national titles, eleven conference titles in the Pac-12 and reached the Women’s College World Series twenty-three times. Under his legendary guidance, players of the caliber of Jennie Finch, Jenny Dalton, Susie Parra, Nancy Evans, Laura Espinoza, Alica Hollowell, Caitilin Howe and many others grew up in the ranks of the Wildcats; in the team of recent years there is also the name of the young Italian Giulia Koutsoyanopulos.
In addition to having achieved a total of 1674 victories as a manager in the NCAA – an all-time record having surpassed the head coach of the University of Michigan Carol Hutchins – Candrea was the Coach of the US national team that won gold in Athens 2004 and silver in Beijing 2008, as well as two world titles (Saskatoon 2002, Beijing 2006).
Since 2021 he has been Senior Advisor of the Italian Elite National Team.
Nancy Evans is a true legend of college softball, having won three NCAA titles during his time at Arizona University (1994-98) under the guidance of Mike Candrea. A pitcher capable of winning 124 games at collegiate level, in 1998 she won the award for best player in the entire country. After finishing her career at Arizona University, whose Hall of Fame she was inducted in 2002, Evans played professionally for eight years, winning the Women’s Professional Fastpitch League title in 1999 and being named an All-Star three times.
Having hung up her glove, she simultaneously began her career as a coach, leading the Netherlands national team to the European title in 2009 and is currently part of the technical staff of Italia Softball as pitching coach in the Elite category.
Rebecca Blatnick, after a brilliant high school career in which she earned the title of the best player in the state, she played for Arizona University from 1998 to 2001, winning the national title in her senior year and being named to the PAC-10 All for two years -Conference Team. After her career on the field, she followed her coach to college, joining the staff at Mike Candrea’s Southwest Softball Camp, as well as working as a private instructor for pitchers. She was part of the staff of Team Hitachi in Japan and is currently employed as a pitching specialist for the youth categories of Italia Softball.
