HOUSTON — Outfielder Michael Brantley, a five-time All-Star and World Series winner, announced his retirement Friday after a 15-season career in major league baseball.
In an interview with the website mlb.com, Brantley explained that the time had come to play his role as a full-time father to his young children, to see them grow up and to witness the important moments of their lives.
Brantley played 10 years in Cleveland and five more seasons in Houston. In 1,445 regular season games, he posted a .298 batting average with 129 home runs, 720 RBIs and 125 stolen bases.
Brantley also appeared in 62 playoff games and his batting average was .283. In two World Series with the Astros, he had a .327 batting average.
Brantley, 36, was a free agent this winter. He had been limited to just 15 regular season games in 2023, returning to action for the final month after a lengthy rehabilitation period related to a shoulder injury and surgery.
Before his return towards the end of August, he had not played in the Major Leagues since June 26, 2022.
