Former Raiders Champion Jack Squirek Dies at 64

Squirek was a linebacker who defended the black and silver team between 1982 and 1985, a time when instead of Las Vegas, the franchise was based in Los Angeles.

The former player was immortalized in the memory of the NFL and the team’s fans for his outstanding participation in Super Bowl XVIII in which the Raiders, then led by head coach Tom Flores, beat the Washington Redskins 38-19.

In that game, the former defender born in Cleveland, Ohio, on February 16, 1959, put out the Redskins’ comeback attempt at the end of the first half, when he intercepted a pass from Joe Theismann, which he took to the end zone, which in that moment made the game 21-3.

“With the Raiders ahead on Washington, near halftime of Super Bowl XVIII, Squirek intercepted a pass on a screen play and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown that gave our team a lead that only grew. until the end of the game to win the title,” the team wrote.

The Raiders selected Jack in the second round of the 1982 draft. He played 53 games with the team before finishing his career with one season with the Miami Dolphins.

Jack Squirek is survived by his wife of 36 years, Penny, and has two children and two grandchildren.
