Tom Selleck: His Career Post-Magnum PI

Summary

Tom Selleck never made an appearance in the Magnum PI reboot. Executive producer Eric Guggenheim revealed that they were joking about this possibility already during the first season. He says they never considered Selleck’s appearance a real possibility.

Tom Selleck’s career after Magnum PI

Selleck would have been perfect in the role of the mysterious Robin Masters, perhaps wearing his iconic Detroit Tigers baseball cap from Magnum P.I. However, it was unlikely that the actor would have been able to reach the filming locations in Hawaii during the production of the reboot. While Thomas Magnum is one of his most famous roles, the actor has remained consistently busy since the original show ended in 1988.

Selleck began his film career thanks to the success of Magnum P.I., starring in films such as Three Men and a Baby, Quigley the Australian and The Gambler, but he also had a significant recurring role in the Friends series in the 1990s. When he returned to television, he became the star of the long-running Jesse Stone TV movie series, starring in nine episodes based on the works of Robert B. Parker. The final three films in the series also overlapped with his lead role in the crime drama Blue Bloods, which aired on CBS.

Finally, it seems that his participation in Blue Bloods, which is preparing to end with the fourteenth season, has prevented Selleck from appearing in Magnum P.I. Since the series ended in 2015, the actor has no longer appeared in projects outside of Blue Bloods, dedicating his time to the drama, in which he starred in an incredible total of 275 episodes.
