VEENENDAAL The badminton players of BC ‘t Veen suffered a narrow defeat on Saturday. Competitor Harderwijk 3 was too strong for the Veenendalers with 5-3.
BC ‘t Veen 1 started the away match against Harderwijk 3 with substitute Leonora Schriemer–van Werven, because Dinja van Haastert was absent. She played the women’s doubles together with Jamie van Brienen. It was noticeable that they were not yet fully attuned to each other. The first set was evenly matched (21-17), but the occasional duo could not make a fist in the second set (21-9).
The men’s doubles often guarantees a win for the men from Veenendaal and this match was no different. It was exciting in both sets, but it was the duo Leon Wegen/Wouter Fondse that came out on top (18-21 18-21).
The four singles matches started with an equal score. Wegen was the first gentleman to take office and did so very creditably. In the first set he was not awarded the two set points (22-20). In the second act he suffered from physical discomfort and was unable to maintain the high level (21-8).
Schriemer–Van Werven was allowed to compete against the best lady in Harderwijk. Despite a lack of match rhythm, she made it quite difficult for her opponent, especially in the first set (21-15 21-11).
It was Wouter Fondse’s task to limit the damage and he succeeded. The second gentleman van Harderwijk got to see all corners of the field and it became an easy victory for the player van ‘t Veen (9-21 13-21).
Van Brienen played a great first set but came up just short (21-17). In the second set there was a promising 11-10 on the scoreboard halfway through, but after this the match fizzled out (21-11).
In the mixes it was a huge task to still get the much-needed points. In both matches it came down to a decisive third set.
Schriemer–Van Werven/Wegen trailed 19-14 after losing the first set (21-14). With good play and seven points in a row, a third set was achieved. There were opportunities for the team from Veenendaal, but they ended up just on the wrong side of the score (21-18).
Van Brienen/Fondse had a sad start. The Veen duo was outplayed with weak play. After being 11-4 behind, better choices were made and the first mix came close (21-18), but it was not enough to end the set winningly.
After this set, the teams were no longer inferior to each other and they fought for every point. The set was won with a strong finish (18-21). The third set turned out to be a true thriller. Despite two match points for Harderwijk, it was BC ‘t Veen that took home the win in the mix (22-20).
With three points it remains exciting for the team from Veenendaal. More points will have to be scored in the coming matches, otherwise it will be very exciting in the fight against relegation. On Saturday the team will play against Kantjils 1 from Wageningen at 12 noon. The match will be played in the De Vallei sports hall, entrance is free.
