Erik Spoelstra hit the jackpot. The Miami Heat coach has agreed to a record eight-year, $120 million (around €109 million) contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Unheard of for a coach in the NBA, but also in the history of North American sport. His annual salary, estimated at around $15 million, remains the second highest in the league behind Gregg Popovich’s (San Antonio Spurs) $19 million.
Spoelstra arrived in Miami as a video assistant in 1997 and hasn’t left Florida since. Promoted to head coach in 2008, the 53-year-old coach won two NBA titles with the Heat, in 2012 and 2013, during the era of the Big Three LeBron James-Dwyane Wade-Chris Bosh. In total, he reached the Finals six times, the last in June, losing to the Denver Nuggets. His team is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 21 wins and 15 losses.
