They don’t rent him a car because he is too young

Being a Formula 1 champion and also doing so with absolute control from start to finish does not give you a free pass for everything. And that is what Max Verstappen has verified firsthand.

The car rental company Sixt denied the Dutchman the rental car he wanted in Portugal. The three-time F1 world champion is apparently too young for the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car. Max Verstappen wanted to have some fun in Portugal at Christmas and traveled to the Algarve. The driver planned to have fun with his family and friends on the mountainous Portimão circuit. But at the airport he got a surprise: the car rental company Sixt did not deliver the desired Mercedes-AMG GT. At 26 years old, Verstappen is too young to rent such a powerful car. He would have to be at least 30 years old.

According to Auto Bild, the desired vehicle was initially a heavy van. But it is said that his manager Raymond Vermeulen forgot his driving license. Verstappen’s entourage quickly changed plans and wanted to rent a car. But Sixt refused to deliver the powerful Mercedes-AMG to the Red Bull driver due to insurance requirements. A more than understandable requirement for any other driver, although a bit shocking when it comes to the three-time world champion, with 54 victories, 32 pole positions and 98 podiums in Formula 1 alone. Verstappen had to settle for a BMW. A premium vehicle whose maximum speed is around 250 km/h.

Six’s Apologies

After the incident came to light, the car rental company: apologized to the so far winner of 54 races: “We apologize to Mr. Verstappen. He can rent us the car he wants at any time,” Sixt said through a spokesman. . “Of course, there is no doubt about his driving skills and his experience with high-performance cars.”

Especially since Verstappen debuted in Formula 1 at the age of 17. When he ran his first Formula 1 race in Melbourne, Australia, in 2015, Jos Verstappen’s son did not yet have a driver’s license.

Despite the apology, Sixt referred to the correct actions of the employees on site: “The employees of our franchise partner in Portugal only followed the rules established by the insurance.” No extra benefits, not even for the most experienced F1 drivers of recent years.
