VAR Controversy Decorates 2023 Asian Cup

Doha

The 2023 Asian Cup was filled with controversy due to the decision WAS. This happened when China’s goal against Tajikistan via a corner kick was disallowed offside.

The 2023 Asian Cup starts this week, precisely on January 12. A number of matches from the group phase have started.

One of the matches that has been completed is China vs Tajikistan in Group A at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Doha, Qatar, Saturday (13/1). This duel ended in a 0-0 draw.

China vs Tajikistan was decorated with controversy due to VAR. This happened when China’s goal scored by Zhu Chenjie was disallowed in the 81st minute.

Zhu Chenjie rattled Tajikistan’s net after heading a corner kick ahead of Tajikistan goalkeeper Ruslan Yatimov. The referee checked VAR and then annulled this goal.

Zhu Chenjie did not commit a foul but Tyias Browning who was standing on the goal line blocking Vakhdat Khanonov was judged to be in an offside position. The offside line was drawn from Yatimov coming out of the nest as he was the second last man in Tajikistan’s defence.

The decision was widely debated on social media. Many people think the referee made a mistake because Browning was not active in reaching the ball.

However, in the FIFA Laws of the Game, if a player blocking the opponent’s movement and view is in an offside position, that player’s movement is considered active until it is decided to be offside. This rule seems to be the basis for VAR to annul China’s goal because Browning blocked Khanonov.

China coach Aleksandar Jankovic also did not want to comment much on the VAR decision. He prefers to focus on improving his team’s performance for the next match.

“It would be too easy to comment on the referee, but I would never do that,” said Jankovic as quoted by France24.

“There are a lot of things we have to improve on in this match, and one of the first things I learned in football is that you don’t solve problems with tears and crying,” he explained.
