Andreeva played for the juniors in Melbourne last year and reached the final.
“In the first set I played incredible tennis, I didn’t expect that from myself. I wanted to enjoy it and that’s what I did,” said Andreeva, who is already ranked 47 in the world rankings and a player in the top ten for the first time defeated.
“I feel more mature now,” she said – and got a laugh.
US Open winner Coco Gauff also got into the tournament well: The American defeated her compatriot Caroline Dolehide 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 and is also in round three. “It was tough,” said the 19-year-old, who is still undefeated in 2024. At the start of the year, the 19-year-old successfully defended her title at the WTA tournament in Auckland.
Wozniacki loses in three sets
Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki (33), however, missed out on making it to the third round.
The Dane lost to the Russian qualifier Maria Timofeeva 6:1, 4:6, 1:6.
Wozniacki, tournament winner in 2018, returned to the tour last year after a three-year baby break and reached the round of 16 at the US Open in New York. In Melbourne, like Naomi Osaka, she started with a wildcard.
