The Miami Dolphins had a press conference to talk about the state of the franchise after the elimination in the Super Wild Card Round against the Kansas City Chiefs where general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel participated.
One of the points to be discussed was the permanence of Tua Tagovailoa as the Dolphins’ franchise quarterback. Grier responded that he is confident the University of Alabama graduate will stay in Miami long term.
“The goal is to have him here long term playing at a high level,” the Dolphins general manager said. Grier noted that talks about a possible contract extension have been only with Tagovailoa’s agent.
In the game against the Chiefs, the Dolphins quarterback completed 20 of the 39 throws he attempted for 199 yards with one touchdown and one interception. However, during the regular season Tagovailoa shined such that he led the league in passing yards with 4,624.
Additionally, he generated 29 touchdown passes and only threw 14 interceptions. Likewise, the quarterback earned his first invitation to the Pro Bowl.

The details of Tua Tagovailoa’s contract
The Dolphins picked up the fifth-year option on Tagovailoa’s contract and that means the quarterback is scheduled to have a base salary of $23.17 million in the 2024 season.
If he agrees to a contractual extension with the Miami franchise, his impact on the salary cap could be modified by deferring a part of his salary to later years.
The contract he signed when he was drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 Draft was a four-year contract in exchange for $30.2 million, fully guaranteed, which included a signing bonus of $19.57 million.
