Roma have announced that they have hired Daniele De Rossi as their new manager. De Rossi will replace Portuguese José Mourinho, who was sacked on Tuesday morning due to the team’s recent poor results. He has signed a contract until the end of the current season.
De Rossi is 40 years old and is a former footballer, considered a “flag” of Roma: he played for Roma for almost his entire career, first in the youth team and then from 2001 to 2019 in the first team, becoming the second player with the highest number of official appearances ever after Francesco Totti. After Totti’s retirement in 2017, he inherited the role of team captain.
After leaving Roma, in 2019 he went to play a year in Argentina with Boca Juniors, before retiring. His coaching career has so far been rather short: between 2021 and 2022 he was assistant to the former coach of the Italian national team Roberto Mancini, and in this role he participated in the 2020 European Championships won by Italy. On 11 October 2022 he was hired as coach of SPAL, in Serie B, but the following February he was sacked, after 17 games and only 3 victories.
