Praised by a journalist following his defensive prowess, Chet Holmgren did a great job for the Thunder today. Better than Victor Wembanyama’s? A member of The Athletic wanted to set the record straight.
Author of a great start to the season, Chet Holmgren is perhaps the big favorite to win the rookie of the year. He has great matches and can count on the Thunder’s record (second in the West) to support his candidacy. Despite everything, Victor Wembanyama further raised his level of play during the month of January, so much so that he dominated in almost all statistics.
The debate between Wembanyama and Holmgren continues
With 3.2 blocks per match, he even stands out as a future contender for the title of defender of the year when we see his impact. The stats all point in his direction, as journalist Matthew Tyan was keen to point out. This follows comments from Sam Quinn, who explained that Holmgren was the best rookie defense since Tim Duncan. Just that.
Wembanyama is the best defensive rookie since Tim Duncan. Y’all can ignore that other guy tweeting things. The metrics are all there. The eye test is definitely all there. Just an absolute alien of a player totally changing the geometry of the court on that side of the ball.

The stats go in Wembanyama’s direction, while even Shaquille O’Neal prefers what the Frenchman offers in place of Chet Holmgren today. The trend could obviously be reversed in the months to come, but the Frenchman dominates to date.
Be careful, however, not to underestimate Holmgren’s contribution, but a clear difference is being made in this month of January. All this while Wembanyama is under minutes restriction as a reminder…

It’s not even tight.
Victor Wembanyama dominates defensively, so much so that Matthew Tynan was keen to point out that he crushes the competition in this sector, including Chet Holmgren. The race will remain no less exciting until the end of the season.
