The stats are worth what they are worth and are not an absolute truth. Especially when used to compare players and teams who played in different eras and different styles of basketball. However, it is still interesting to note that Nikola Jokic just exceeded Michael Jordan in the all-time Player Efficiency Rating rankings. After the Denver Nuggets’ last game, the 2023 Finals MVP now has a PER of 27.92, 0.01 more than the Chicago Bulls legend.
As a reminder, PER is determined via a formula created by John Hollinger, which takes into account positive and negative measurements, weighting them with a ratio per minute and by the pace with which the team plays. A figure then gives an idea of the player’s performance over a current season or, as here, over a career.
This index has been criticized, reworked and declined for years, but it remains quite popular among users of NBA statistics. Currently, Nikola Jokic is ahead of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Shaquille O’Neal, David Robinson, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Pettit, Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
When he hangs up, Jokic will have this additional statistical argument (if he stays that high) to claim a place of choice in the hypothetical all-time rankings.
