VEENENDAAL In the still exciting race to remain in the fourth division, BC ‘t Veen played the derby against Netwerk in Ede on Sunday. Trainer Wim van de Craats was there to coach us: every point counts. There was also a large audience present. That saw the Eden team win 5-3. BC ‘t Veen finds itself in last place, it will be exciting weeks for the Veenendalers.

Wouter Fondse and Leon Wegen played well in their opening match in the men’s doubles. They won the first set and were also ahead in the second set when one of their opponents was injured. Network had to give up and the first point went to ‘t Veen.

The ladies of ‘t Veen, Jamie van Brienen and Dinja van Haastert, who returned from a holiday, also got off to a good start. The first set went to the opponents, but it was exciting (21-17). “Unfortunately we were unable to keep up in the second set, our opponents won,” said Van Haastert.

STRONG SINGLE PARTIES

Fondse played a strong singles match. He won the first set, narrowly lost the second, but managed to win his single strongly in a 3-setter. Van Haastert had chances but lost in a two-setter because the opponent played a smarter game. Wegen played against the same gentleman at home against Netwerk, then narrowly lost in a 3-setter and intended to turn the tables on this match. Yet this time too, the opponent just managed to win the game in a very exciting 3-setter.

Van Brienen easily defeated her opponent in the first set, but she came back in the second set. In a three-setter, Van Brienen still won her single very strongly. The Veenendalers reached a score of 3-3 when the mixes started. “In both mixed matches, the opponents played too strong a game, so we ended the match with 3 points,” says Van Haastert.

WIN IT ALL

And so there are still exciting weeks ahead: “We are currently in last place, but we have played fewer matches than the other teams in the group. To stay in this division we will have to win the remaining matches. With three games to go we will have to fight for our place.” The Veenendalers (eighth in the standings) still play against number 3 Smashing and against numbers 7 Didam and 6 De Kantjils.
