MLB Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg Announces Prostate Cancer Treatment

Ryne Sandberg, member of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Hall of Fame, announced that he is receiving treatment to counteract prostate cancer.

Sandberg noted in a statement published through the Cooperstwon Hall of Fame that during his process of this disease he has the company and support of his family. He assured that they will remain united to face it and overcome it.

“I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best healthcare team and our dear friends. We will continue to be positive, strong and fighting to get through this. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family,” said the former Chicago Cubs second baseman.

The Cubs have expressed their support and solidarity for their franchise player for several years.

“Ryne (Sandberg), we send you love, strength and support. With arms linked, we join you and your family on the path ahead to conquer this battle,” the club said in a statement this Monday.

Ryne Sandberd’s career

In his MLB career, Sandberg played 10 of his 15 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, establishing himself as one of the institution’s historical figures, to the point that this year the team plans to unveil a statue of the 64-year-old former player. , along with other greats outside Wrigley Field.

During his career in the Major Leagues, the former player batted .285, with 403 doubles, 76 triples and 282 home runsadding 1,061 RBIs and 1,318 runs scored.

Sandberg also showed the great speed he possessed and which led him to accumulate 344 stolen bases.

In his glory days, the player won the lead in runs scored in the 1984 (114), 1989 (104) and 1990 (116) seasons, he was also the leader in triples in 1984 (19) and in home runs in 1990 (40 ).

Sandberg won the award for Most valuable Player (MVP) of the National League in 1984, a season in which he batted .314, with 36 doubles, 19 triples, 19 home runs, 84 RBIs and 114 runs scored.

He also won the Silver Bat seven times, won the Gold Glove nine times defending second base and attended seven All-Star Games.

After retiring as a player, Sandberg managed the Philadelphia Phillies for three seasons (from 2013 to 2015).

Sandberg was selected to the MLB Hall of Fame in the Class of 2005.
