Jannik Sinner adds another milestone to his career. The 22-year-old South Tyrolean is in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne. There will be a top duel with Novak Djokovic.

All South Tyrolean tennis fans should mark their calendars for next Friday. Then Jannik Sinner will meet Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. It is the 7th duel between the two heavyweights, who have already played against each other in a Grand Slam semi-final. Last year, Sinner dueled Djokovic at Wimbledon and lost to the world number 1 in 3 sets.

Sinner also won against Andrey Rublev in 3 sets. Sinner thus confirms his extremely strong impression in Melbourne, because so far the man from Sexten has not made a single sentence. The South Tyrolean may have been a slight favorite against Rublev due to his current form, but the Russian is number 5 in the world – and therefore quite a high-profile player. Added to this was the horrendous playing time in Australia, as the start of the Sinner match was repeatedly delayed. In the end, the game didn’t end until after 1 a.m. (local time in Australia). Rublev still has to wait for his first semi-final appearance at a Grand Slam tournament. He has lost all 10 (!) quarter-final games so far.

Brief concerns about Sinner’s health

After Sinner won the first set 6:4, slight doubts arose. The South Tyrolean repeatedly clutched his stomach. Cramps? An abdominal muscle injury? All speculation. Sinner did not have to ask his physiotherapist to come onto the court, nor did the pain affect him over a longer period of time.

Rublev, on the other hand, seemed to be down, but came back powerfully towards the end of the set and forced Sinner into the tiebreak. Sinner won this with 7:5.

After that, Rublev’s resistance seemed broken. The Russian no longer really believed in success and lost important points. When push came to shove, Sinner was the winner. This was also the case at the end of 2:41 minutes, when Sinner converted his first match point to reach the semi-finals.
