MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City announced on Thursday the signing of youthful Argentine midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate, an acquisition that echoes the previous operation that brought in his compatriot Julián Álvarez.
The reigning champions of Europe and the English Premier League would have paid 12.5 million pounds (15.9 million dollars for Echeverri. El “Diablito” was the captain of the Argentina team that reached the semifinals of the U17 World Cup at the end of the last year, standing out with a hat trick against Brazil in the quarterfinals.
Echeverri signed with City until June 2028, but will remain at River until January next year.
Álvarez also joined City from River in 2022, and at the beginning of the agreement he played on loan with the Argentine club.
“Everyone at City is looking forward to welcoming Claudio to the club and wish him the best of luck for the remainder of his time at River Plate,” City said in a statement.
Echeverri, who turned 18 on January 2, has played six games with River’s first team, which has former City defender Martín Demichelis as coach.
