Joel Schwärzler – number one in the world among juniors as of today

On Saturday, ÖTV sports director congratulated his protégé Joel Schwärzler on social media (and certainly personally) on his 18th birthday. Two days later it is now clear in black and white: Schäwrzler is the new number one in the junior world rankings. That was already clear after the previous leader, Joao Fonseca from Brazil, decided not to take part in the Australian Open. But when it is officially confirmed, there is even more joy.

Schwärzler himself didn’t serve in Melbourne; he will still play in Roland-Garros for the juniors. And maybe afterwards in Roehampton, Wimbledon and at the US Open. Unless he wins the title in Paris. Just like Melzer managed to do on the hallowed turf in London in 1999.

The focus in 2024 is on the transition to the Challenger or ATP tour. Coach Melzer put it this way in an interview with tennisnet.com a few weeks ago: “Joel has to develop further as a tennis player.” This is difficult enough for all young aces. But the examples of Jakub Mensik and Dino Prizmic, who are around the same age as Joel Schwärzler, show that it is not impossible.
