Havana, February 3.- Jonathan Charón (60 kg) and Orlando Polanco (66 kg) began Cuban participation in the international judo circuit this Friday.
Both went out to fight on the first day of the Paris 2024 Judo Grand Slam, in which six other compatriots will participate.
The young Charón emerged victorious in his debut against the Mexican Arath Juárez, whom he defeated by ippon in the golden rule.
He had a different fate in his second fight against the Ukrainian Dilshot Khalmatov, tenth in the ranking of the International Judo Federation (IJF), who beat him by ippon.
Polanco also won his first round bout against Georgian Tengo Zirakashvili by waza-ari-awasete-ippon after a Ko-uchi-gari technique.
In his second outing he lost by ippon against the Spanish David García Torne, ninth ranked in the IJF ranking.
Until next Sunday, Magdiel Estrada (73 kg), Iván Silva (90 kg), Andy Granda (+100 kg), Maylín del Toro (63 kg), Idelannis Gómez (70 kg) and Lianet Cardona (78 kg) will compete.
They will seek to place Cuba in the medal table of a tournament in which more than 600 judokas of 107 nationalities participate. (Text and photo: JIT)
