A little over six years ago, the NBA took the plunge, opening the door to advertising on the jerseys and floors of its franchises.
A mini-revolution quickly became mainstream, generating several tens of millions of dollars in additional revenue for franchises and the NBA. This Thursday, the league announced that it had signed a multi-year contract with Emirates, the airline based in Dubai.
This partnership will first take the form of an advertising patch, “Emirates”, on referees’ outfits. This will appear on the torso and chest of officials for the first time during the All-Star Game in Indianapolis, then for the rest of the season. It will then be the turn of the G-League referees (in 2024-2025) then the WNBA (from 2025) to suffer the same fate.
Also at All-Star Weekend, Emirates will be the sponsor of the NBA Crossover. Another change, the “In Season Tournament” trophy is renamed the “Emirates NBA Cup”.
