Yankees Dominate Blue Jays, Chase Gerrit Cole in 2024 Season Opener

The Toronto Blue Jays chased Gerrit Cole after two full innings of work in his first game of 2024 on Friday.

The 2023 Cy Young Trophy winner allowed three hits and two runs in the first inning alone and was temporarily removed from the game after two outs. However, he returned to his post for the second round. The 33-year-old pitcher rallied afterward, giving up no hits before leaving with one out in the third inning. He had three runs and four earned runs on his record.

Recent Toronto acquisition Daniel Vogelbach stood out, hitting a home run in his first at-bat.

For the Yankees, the big guns were in the starting lineup. Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo all took part in the game. Rizzo delivered a major blow to the Jays in the bottom of the second, hitting a grand slam to increase the lead to 6-2. He later added to it by hitting a second home run.

Juan Soto, acquired from the San Diego Padres by New York in a monster seven-player trade last December, also made his move, hitting a long ball in a Yankees uniform.

For the Jays, pitcher Jordan Romano did well, getting two strikeouts and allowing no hits in the only inning he took the mound. Davis Schneider for his part hit a home run to reduce the gap, but it was far from enough for the Jays. The Yankees ultimately won 8-4.
