Baena Athletes Ready for Intense Weekend of Competition Across Various Sports

This weekend’s sports agenda is presented, once again, with an intense and varied competitive activity for athletes and clubs from Baena who, on this occasion, have their main focuses of attention far from Baena, as is the case of the competitions that will be played in badminton, swimming, petanque and off-road cycling, in addition to the different league commitments in table tennis, indoor soccer, soccer, 7-a-side soccer and handball.

For the Baena Badminton Club this weekend there are two open fronts, one at the national level and the other regional. On the one hand, in the ‘Mireia Belmonte’ pavilion in the Murcian town of Las Torres de Cotillas, the Baenense players Teresa Cabello and Fernando Molina compete in the IX National Senior Master, organized by the Spanish Badminton Federation and the Higher Sports Council, which will have a total of 122 participants from 40 clubs throughout the country.

Teresa Cabello will play in the women’s singles team of category A, in addition to the mixed doubles with Fernando Molina and the women’s doubles with Mª Isabel Sáez, from the host club; while Fernando Molina will also play in the men’s B2 individual team.

On the other hand, in the Malaga town of Villanueva de la Concepción, the Andalusian Prebase Championship is held, in which the promising Baenenses, María Mérida, compete in the individual under-13 category and in the mixed under-15 doubles with her brother. Rafa Mérida who also competes in the individual under-15 team. Additionally, in the men’s under-13 category, Juanjo Lastres and Mario Castillo compete in the individual team and are also a couple in the doubles team.

There is also a double event this weekend for the Baena Swimming Club which, on the one hand, competes with five swimmers – Irene Amo, Isabel Ortiz, Alejandra Santano, Álvaro Luque and Francisco Javier Santano – in the first timing of the Zonal Phase Western of the Andalusian Junior and Absolute Championships that are held in the Aira pool in Córdoba with 225 swimmers from 19 clubs, and in Granada, Carmen Mª Castilla from Baen competes in the Andalusian University Championship representing the University of Córdoba.

In petanque, the day takes us to the Teatinos neighborhood of the capital of Malaga, where three players from the Baenense Petanca Club, the seniors Natalio Torres and Manuel De las Morenas and the junior, Junior Moral, compete between Saturday and Sunday in the Petanque Championship.
