The draw for the first round of the ATP 1000 Masters in Monte Carlo took place on Friday evening. Jannik Sinner will only start in round two, but he already knows his possible opponents.

From Sinner’s point of view, there is good news to report: No Carlos Alcaraz or Novak Djokovic before the final! The draw for the first Masters 1000 of the season on clay meant that a direct meeting with the Spaniard would only be possible in the final. In the semifinals, Alcaraz would also have to eliminate Novak Djokovic first.

After a bye in the first round, Sinner will face the winner of the game between Sebastian Korda (ATP 27) and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP 28) in his second round match. And although the man from Sexten is currently probably the strongest tennis player in the world, it won’t be a walk in the park for him. This is mainly because from now on the game will be played on clay and this is not exactly one of Sinner’s specialties.

Many clay court specialists are waiting for Sinner

As the tournament in Monte Carlo progresses, things could become even more challenging for Sinner. While he could meet Bublik, Struff and Baez in round three (he has already triumphed on clay in Brazil and Chile this year), a duel with Miami final opponent Grigor Dimitrov or Holger Runde would be possible in the quarterfinals. The Dane in particular would be an extremely unpleasant opponent, as he defeated Sinner in the semi-finals of last year’s Monte Carlo tournament. Rune is also known for preferring to play on sandy surfaces. If he is physically and mentally in shape, he is definitely a serious competitor for everyone.

Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev or – rather unlikely – Stefanos Tsitsipas would be possible opponents in the semi-finals, before either Novak Djokovic (ATP 1) or Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 3) would wait in the final. Jannik Sinner will start the tournament in his adopted hometown either on Tuesday or Wednesday.
