Voyageurs Badminton Team Exceeds Expectations at Provincial Collegiate Championship

The Voyageurs from Cégep de Sept-Îles managed to do well at the provincial collegiate badminton championship. Jérémie Stea and Olivier Dion, who were a pair in men’s doubles, held off the dominant players from Centre-du-Québec and Outaouais, according to head coach Alex Couture.

“Jérémie and Olivier knew how to fight hard against the best players in the province,” assures the coach.

The color bearers from Cégep de Sept-Îles started their competition at Collège Bois-de-Boulogne (Montreal) on a good note, defeating a duo from Cégep de Sainte-Foy in three sets. They were able to keep the pressure on their opponents until the end with a well-executed offensive performance.

The task did not look easy for the Septiliens’ second match as they faced the best team from the Outaouais, eventually silver medalists. The Voyageurs duo, despite difficult exchanges, had to admit defeat in two sets. He secured a place in the playoffs by winning his last preliminary match, at the expense of representatives from Cégep de Rimouski, despite the fact that Jérémie Stea broke the string of his main racket in warm-up.

The Stea and Dion journey ended in the quarter-finals, dropping the flag against another duo from Cégep de Sainte-Foy, future gold medalists.

“It was an extremely rewarding experience for the young athletes. They were able to play a higher level of badminton, demonstrating to Quebec the potential of players from the North Shore. For this duo’s first provincial collegiate championship, they exceeded expectations by reaching the quarter-final,” commented Alex Couture.

For the entire Voyageurs badminton team, the coach speaks of great progress demonstrated by the athletes throughout the season. He and his colleague Yu Chan Mei give a special mention to Pierre-Luc Denis, Alyson Dufour and Charles-Édouard Leclerc.
