Sport, community, urban regeneration. The new colorful playground in Piazza Giovanni Lenti in Bra was inaugurated with a party yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 8 May).
In addition to dozens of young athletes from the Abet Basket Team 71 and curious people from the Madonna dei Fiori neighborhood, there were also two basketball “legends”: Carlo “Charlie” Caglieris (playmaker in the 70s and 80s, winner of three championships Italians with Virtus Bologna and the first Italian gold medal at the European Championships in 1983) and Carlo Dellavalle (a top-flight basketball player from Alba who ended his career in Bra).
Gianfranco Berrino and Roberto Burdese, president and vice president of the sports association, spoke about the genesis of the project before cutting the ribbon: “Our intention is to renovate a series of fields throughout the city: this is only the first. An initiative designed during the pandemic to create outdoor play spaces that were as beautiful as the indoor ones.”
Also present were Bruno Mazzola (president of Abet Laminati, sponsor of Braida basketball for half a century) and Marco Carelli, general director of Banca di Cherasco: the Cooperative Credit Institute supported the total restyling of the outdoor field with new colors (according to a graphic design granted by Abet Laminati: a reproduction of a building in Seoul, South Korea, designed by architects Alessandro and Francesco Mendini), replacement of the old baskets and programming of the next summer events.
The mayor of Bra Gianni Fogliato: “The collaboration of two local companies and the sports club represents a virtuous example of collaboration and urban regeneration”. Mazzola recalled that the field “is beautiful even when it is not used, because color is life. A pleasant place is an incentive for kids who play and want to have fun: what counts is physical well-being which also brings with it mental well-being.”
Carelli concluded: “I am proud, as a native of Braida, of the creation of this field: a lively place to play sports. I saw the first guys playing yesterday in the rain too. We believed in the social impact of this project presented by the basketball club: thus creativity and art are at the service of the community, generating social utility and beauty.”
